Footloose & fancy-free-play

Footloose & Fancy-free-play is our new loose-parts junk play programme.  We visit Schools and events with our trailer full of trash, to enable and promote child-led freeplay, as well as sustainability through re-use of resources.

Footloose & fancy-free-play runs as a one-off event or as a series of events.

We have funding to bring our programme to six Porirua Schools this year

We have run our footloose & fancy-free-play programme at a number of events for Porirua City Council, at Trash Palace in Porirua (our local tip shop who partner with us to provide much of our junk) and soon to be at Schools around the Porirua region.

Thanks to Tū Manawa funding, Our experienced kaiako visit schools three times in succession to deliver our loose parts play programme outside of class time.  We work with staff to empower children in their play, encourage creativity, imagination and social competence, whilst also showing teachers how to enable the kind of play that gives children freedom to learn and develop in the best way for them; through play!

We are not bothered by rain; we can run on School fields, in halls or under cover outside.

A big part of our kaupapa in footloose & fancy-free-play is about repurposing junk (aka loose parts) as resources for play.  It is estimated that in Aotearoa we generate 17.49 million tonnes of waste per year, of which an estimated 12.59 million tonnes are sent to landfill.  Through generating conversation and showing children that a large percentage of ‘waste’ can actually be re-used for awesome play experiences, we are also teaching them that there are choices other than consumerism, or wanting the flashest, newest toy.

Children will be smarter, better able to get along with others, healthier and happier when they have regular opportunities for free and unstructured play in the out-of-doors (Burdette and Whitaker, 2005).
